Channels

Channel statuses

Your channel’s “channel status” (previously known as “service type definitions”) is an important thing to clarify when adding your service to roTV. It helps determine where your channel is available in the wider Robloxian television ecosystem.

There are four current channel statuses: free-to-air, premium, platform-exclusive, and grandfathered.

Free-to-air channels, also known as “free-to-view” channels, are channels available freely outside of a premium television service such as roTV. In addition to carriage on those services, these channels may also be accessible through a channel’s website or through their direct stream URL on their broadcast platform.

Premium channels are channels available solely through premium television services, such as roTV. Premium channels can be carried across multiple providers, assuming carriage deals with each provider have been agreed upon. These channels’ stream data has not been made publicly available through other means, and these channels are not locked down to a specific premium television service. Channels referred to in some contexts as “basic premium” are channels which carry similar content to an IRL “basic cable” service, and the term is used to differentiate between these types of channels and more valuable, “higher-tier” services.

Platform-exclusive channels, also known as simply “exclusive” channels, are channels which have specified that they are solely available on one premium television service, such as roTV, and one premium television service only. In addition to their stream data not being made available publicly outside of the premium television system, this data has also not been made available to other premium television services.

Channels can, at the discretion of their owners or broadcasters, change their channel statuses freely; however, in the case of roTV, you must notify us if you intend to change the status of a channel that you own or operate.
